I’m going to the extreme here on the other side of the entry-level tent as an option for a tiny house. See the previous post about living in a tent here.
My son and I were off exploring some back roads in central Oregon last weekend and on one of our side trips to check out a potential camping spot we discovered a retired couple who are full-timing it in a Patagonia Global Expedition Vehicle. (see above picture)
We stopped and talked to them, keeping our social distancing of course and I learned a little about their travels.
They are retired and sold everything they owned and purchased the Patagonia vehicle to live and travel in. The original plan was to drive all the way down and through South America but with COVID 19 they changed their mind for now. They started their trip by going to Baja, Mexico, and exploring that area.
From Mexico, they have worked their way north. Traveling short distances and staying off the beaten path.
With this rig, they can pretty much go anywhere. It just is a major expense to fill the 200-gallon diesel tank. I made the mistake of not asking what kind of mileage they get but I’m sure it is less than 5 miles to the gallon with those huge tires and the considerable weight of the Expedition vehicle.
They have room for 2 to 3 weeks of food and with the solar heater and diesel generator, they can live off-grid easily for that length of time.
They have a motorcycle aboard for short trips and exploration of the areas they choose to stay in.
We were not able to go inside their Extreme RV so I did some research when I got home.
Starting at $500k, this would not fit the normal tiny house or RV budget. Like I said just the opposite of living in a tent…
