Celebrate Living Tiny Legally in San Luis Obispo at Upcoming Expo

Earlier this year, the city of San Luis Obispo became the second city in California to allow tiny houses on wheels in backyards. The city council unanimously voted in favor of adding them to their new Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance. Fun fact: on August 13th, 2019, the first legal THOW moved into an SLO City backyard.

A brand-new expo event is planned to celebrate this victory and to educate the community on the sustainability opportunities that tiny home and simple living provide. The Tiny Footprint Expo is October 11-13 at the Madonna Meadows Fairgrounds. It is presented by SmartShare Housing Solutions, an affordable housing nonprofit, the City of San Luis Obispo and 20 other organizations.

To kick-off the event, planners and policymakers are invited to attend an educational workshop on Friday. Then throughout the weekend, celebrations and presentations will highlight everything tiny house living-related, as well as, sustainable practices in housing, mobility, food, and energy.

“The tiny living movement is sweeping the nation–come see inside these cute, cool dwellings and learn about the tiny lifestyle from a great lineup of speakers. From tinies to skoolies to vans and more, the Tiny Footprint Expo will expand your definition of ‘home’!”

What to Expect:

  • Tiny home tours
  • Full speaker line-up
  • Exhibitor booths and product demos
  • E-bike tours
  • Food trucks
  • Water bottle refill stations

Importantly, the organizers’ goal is for the Expo to be a zero-waste event. Besides offering on-site recycling, they’re encouraging attendees to bring reusable water bottles and dining kits and to carpool.
