Living on the Road in a 27-foot Airstream as a Professional Organizer

While I must admit living this way was not always the plan, I will say I wouldn’t want it any other way. Noa means “from love” in Japanese, and is a popular Hawaiian name meaning “free” or “freedom”. It’s very fitting that our Airstream is named Noa, as she allows us to be free to travel across the U.S.. We help clients regain control of their mental and physical functioning, making sure their homes support their lifestyle and offer stress-free, clutter-free living via the art of organizing. Noa measures roughly 200 square feet holding only the necessities needed for everyday living. Her journey started in southern California.

I built Lilly’s Organizing, a professional organizing business, out of my love and appreciation for minimalist living and organized spaces. I took my past experience in the medical field helping clients through life transitions and as a military spouse who spent 22 years packing and moving into new places, and brought these skills to the most important space—the home.

My husband Frank, who has recently retired from the Navy after 22 years of service and loves to travel and see new places, is a mechanic at heart and do-it-all handyman with a soft spot for woodworking. This makes him the perfect complement to my organizational abilities. Together with our passion for discovering new places and faces, we decided Lilly’s Organizing would be the perfect way to take all of the things we loved and go visit the country my husband has so proudly served for years. We decided it was time to bring our services to people nationwide where people may not have an organizer available. Our tiny home allows for just that.

Our Airstream features a full kitchen, dinette that seats four and doubles as a bed, a sofa, queen size bed in the bedroom area (minus an inch or two), two televisions, and a split bathroom. Even though this Airstream does not have any slide outs to allow for extra space as you would see in other RV’s, it does make up in panoramic windows in the front and rear and large side windows that bring in plenty of light with views that make you feel like you’re outside. Of course while living tiny in a space that constantly moves, things can be knocked about during travel, so it is imperative that every item in our space has a home.

We find that having items contained in baskets or bins measured for its space works best. It helps to not only separate items into their appropriate categories but can also prevent these items from falling if a door or drawer flings open mid journey. Thus far we have traveled through the lower states from southern California all the way down the Florida Keys and heading north into New England. Aside from hitting some road debris during our travel which ended in a flat tire and hitting some potholes entering some national parks which bent one of our stabilizers, almost all our items were maintained in their intended space inside.

Our journey will continue to take us through this beautiful country with unexpected turns, feeling free and enjoying what we love with the hopes we can inspire others or at least help turn their space back into an enjoyable functioning space, beautifully organized and tranquil.
