6. Super Tiny Homes

As featured in Honolulu Star-Advertiser on Sunday 3/3/19
Alternative, environmentally friendly, permit-free, affordable, off-the-grid housing.
My name is Rich Richardson I am an artist, art consultant, and co-founder of Chinatown Artists Lofts, First Friday Honolulu, and The ARTS at Marks Garage. I was named 1 of 6 People Making a Difference in Honolulu Magazine in November 2013 and I am now building tiny homes in Honolulu.

The outside evokes Hawaii’s plantation housing. The shape and floor plan are inspired by Gypsy Caravans and English Shepard’s Huts.

The Quonset Hut-style curved corrugated roof provides a high-arched ceiling. The foundation is a rugged street-legal trailer from Texas. The minimalist interior sports re-used materials for flooring and furnishing.

It’s off-grid ready, with solar power, rainwater catchment, composting toilet, and a hand-powered washing machine. Propane fuels the stove, refrigerator/freezer and the on-demand hot water heater for the shower. The sofa also serves as a single or double bed and has ample storage underneath.

It measures 18 feet long, 8.5 feet wide, and has 140 square feet of interior space. A lanai and awning fold out from the double French doors forming a bridge to the outdoors.

I am building now, mostly by hand, by myself to the International Building Code. This is the first of many. There is an incredible demand for alternative housing in Hawaii. “House Trailers” as they are called here, are regulated by the DMV not the Department of Permitting and Planning and are legal on any piece of private property you have permission to park.

I am located in Kalihi Valley, a tropical rainforest 15 minutes from Downtown Honolulu, if you would like to take a tour. It’s a super-fun project and I am lucky everyone loves the look of it.

    • Hi Naya,

I’m on Kauai as well and had a 400 SF fold out house delivered last year that I doubt I will ever have need of.

It is a two bedroom, one bath room w/shower, kitchen and living room. I had a nice front deck with canopy created for it which is steel framing with a brown composite deck. Never bothered to set it up so the materials are simply stored for it.

I had concerns about power so I had a really cool solar generator put together. It’s designed along the lines of solar light towers only I didn’t bother with the mast and high intensity LED lights. It’s around 2,500 watts of super efficient solar panels and a bunch of huge deep cycle batteries.

The inverter is pure sine wave 120 volt 60 Hz. Should be in the 5-8 Kw range.

      Never unpacked it either.

Home is furnished with beds, counters, refrigerator ect. none of which have ever been used.

Let me know if you are still looking.

      Cheers,

      Drew

      • Hello Drew!
OMG, I never got a notification that you had replied (don’t think), and I did not come back to site per se. I know that it was a year ago, but have you sold this already?
I am now more ready to actually purchase one, and would love to hear from you, if possible.
I will also go to where Kent pointed as well.
So sorry for delay, and thank you so very much,
        Naya
