Martin House-To-Go Update

by Kent Griswold on August 19th, 2008. 23 Comments

I think this company has gone out of business as I have not been able to get in touch with Julie in quite some time.

One of the most popular posts in this blog is the Martin House-To-Go post.

Dan from Southern California has been talking with Martin House-To-Go about their houses and they have given him a private preview of a house that is not even on their website yet.

From what Dan understands, it is available for purchase. Here are the highlights.

martin

$37,900 complete (everything below is included in price)

  • Super sized version 10′ wide by 20′ long
  • Pre-wired for cable and internet
  • Under counter fridge
  • 11 windows
  • Pedestal sink in bathroom with full shower and electric composting toilet standard
  • On-demand tankless hot water heater
  • GE 2 burner electric stove top
  • Microwave
  • Cedar kitchen counter
  • Custom bamboo wood floors
  • Remote-controlled air conditioning standard ( very very cool ) – no pun intended -
  • Built in window seat with underneath storage

Dan says the kitchen is a lot better than their previous model – it’s HUGE and he likes the cedar – they said it has some sort of high cost expensive sealer on it.  He thinks the cedar kitchen counter gives it a nice touch of a “woodsy cabin” feel.

Dan’s wife thought window box for flowers adds a nice touch to the house as well.

Overall, I think they managed to put a lot of ‘charm and cozy home appeal’ into this one.  When you compare this new one to the one on their website, I think this one is a world apart better.

Quoting Dan’s wife, ” Yes, I could live in that ” or have a guest stay in it.

They also showed Dan photos of the “Sportsman Model” below…. for campers, hunters, nature lovers …

It looks pretty cool set up with cots and camping equipment.  You could definitely see yourself taking it out hitched up to your truck for a weekend camping trip.  It sure beats a tent any day of the week.  Considering all the stuff you hear going on at campgrounds, I like the idea of locking my front door at night while camping.

I think Martin House-To-Go adding the front porch gave it a nice touch too.

Thank you Dan for sharing these photos and thoughts with us.

Loved this! Was curious about the bedroom set up…

  2. Kent says:

    Hi Shelley,

It appears just to have a loft for sleeping. That is how they have done it in the past and how it appears in the photo.

Update: Dan just gave me the following info:

Oh..and for sleeping arrangements I was told you can get 2 mattresses up in the loft – but you could also put 2 cots in the back room or have it enclosed as a “mini one bedroom”.

  3. Daniel says:

I like this one. It’s very open with the high ceiling. I like this about as much as the Tumbleweeds. The tiny house market is offering quite a bit at this point.

    Thanks!

  4. Greg says:

You guys rock!!! How do you do something this beautiful for this price? Can we have one in New Zealand? Just kidding. Actually, no – seriously!

  5. Julie says:

Gorgeous! But how do you get UP to the loft?

  6. Michael says:

Great to see and update on this project. Really nice finish work on the interior. I’m looking forward to seeing more on their website, especially the layout. I looks like the bathroom is curtained off. Not sure if that’s right or just how it looks in these photos.

  7. Christina says:

Exquisite! Yes, this one looks better made and more detailed than the one on the website. Is the composting toilet in that wooden box in the bathroom? Thanks Kent!

  8. Kent says:

    Hi Julie,

I believe a ladder is used to get to the loft. I have not seen any pictures of one on her site or in these photos but that is how Jay Shafer gets into his and the Martin House-To-Go was originally based off of Jay Shafers plans at Tumbleweed.

Yes, Christina, I believe that is the composting toilet. I wish I had a floor plan but I don’t. I will try contacting Martin House-To-Go and see if I can get one.

  9. [...] are a few answers to our last post on the Martin House-To-Go. I am featuring some new pictures of the Sportsman in this post. Again these are a first view [...]

  10. Ilana says:

This is what I show people when trying to explain why I LOVE the “tiny house movement” (I live in 250 sq ft right now – 1955 travel trailer) and intend to move up to something gorgeous like this in a few years. Thank you for building these beautiful tiny homes, and for sharing the photos!!

  11. Larissa says:

I was one the site about two months ago but I have not been able to find it lately. Did the company go under?

  12. Marty says:

One of these homes was parked across from me in a campground in MD – I so loved it – the owner (deaf) was putting up wooden shutters which look terrific. I’ve tried numerous times to conact the company with no responses – help – very interested.

I will try to get in touch with Julie, I’m not for certain they are still in business. Their website was down for a while but is back up again, so just not sure what is going on.

  13. Tim says:

Someday very soon we will be seeing these types of homes everywhere, this one is just incredibly beautiful! I could easily see myself living in this with no problem what so ever. I do have one question, from most of the posts I have read here on this blog, I thought 8 foot width was the max, can you tow this 10 wide home without permits everytime you want to go somewhere, are there any restrictions towing a 10 foot wide home such as this? Thanks for any help clearing this up for me, Tim

  14. Andrew says:

For those of you like me who were trying to find her website, I believe it has changed to http://www.lodge-on-wheels.com

  15. oscar says:

i would buy it if it was cheaper….maybe 10k.
    its too much money.

  16. Don says:

Are they still in business? I tried sending an email through the Contact Us page and got a 404 error. Not sure if the message was delivered or not.

I thought that they also made an 8-foot version. Not true?

    • Kent Griswold says:

I have not been able to get through to Julie and am assuming that they have gone out of business. I will put a note in the post stating this.

  17. Mel says:

Gosh, it would be so disappointing to find they are out of business.

I’m in the market to either build one myself or buy one in the next year, and I really like this.

  18. Lauren says:

    @Kent:
If you ever get in touch with Julie can you ask if they would sell their blue prints?
I love the way they have things laid out and am supper bummed that they aren’t around anymore
