  2. I was very excited to see this post, but was hoping for some clairification. The post states that the show is looking for both folks already living in and folks looking to build a tiny house-type space, but the information in the application link only asks for those already living in their space. Was there something I missed? Thanks!

I HAVE THE 8X20 CABOOSE AND THE TINY HOUSE IN A HOUSE BOTH LIVABLE. JUST FIGHTING ZONING LAWS AND RESTRICTIONS. MAYBE A LITTLE EXPOSURE WILL HELP FOLKS UNDERSTAND WE ARE NOT KOOKS CAMPING OUT IN A DRAFTY SHACK BUT A NEW WAVE OF TINY HOUSE ENTHUSIAST WHO JUST WANT TO LIVE LIGHTER ON THE PLANET AND MAINTAIN A HIGHER LEVEL OF DISPOSABLE INCOME RATHER THAN DUMPING EVERY DIME WE HAVE ON A MORTGAGE THAT WE WILL NEVER LIVE THRU.

DO YOU KNOW ANY MORE ABOUT WHO OR WHAT THE PROGRAM WILL BE. I LOVED “EXTREME HOMES” WHEN IT WAS ON, I INVISION SOMETHING SIMILAR. WAS JUST CURIOUS IF YOU KNOW ANY MORE ABOUT THE PLAN.

  5. Wondering if this is the Jordan Lipp one- or which. The Networks are all of the sudden drooling over tiny houses it seems- esp Discovery, who are putting out their feelers for a show. I’ve gotten contacted by 14-15 people in the last month or two for possible hosting, etc. Crazy. Good luck all! And if you get picked, have fund with it!

  6. I applied! 😀 My husband and I have been planning to make our tiny/small home move this summer. I’ve been reading books, blogs, websites etc. for the last few months and we are registered for a Tumbleweed House workshop in May. We regularly watch shows on TV all the time for real estate, building and home ideas. Having the extra help and knowledge to help us would be amazing! Thanks, Kent!

  7. Well my husband and I have our tiny house coming the end of April the beginning of May and we can’t wait. Large by comparison to some ours is 396ft. We downsized from 1500 square ft. YaHooooooooo!

  8. My boyfriend and I have applied for the show. We are looking to build a tiny home but have limited resources to do so. So even if we don’t get picked but we be watching it for ideas and help in this new adventure we are ready to begin. We can not wait to be able to live off the grid not live paycheck to paycheck.

  9. I applied. I would really like to be on a show like this. We are looking at going from a 3000 sq ft home to 170. Very tired of payments and something has to change. Exciting

  10. Don’t care about the TV show as I don’t care for TV and.

However, is there a write-up somewhere on the tiny house in the photo used in this blog entry? I love how the exterior looks. I’d really like to see more of this house.

    Thanks!

  12. A good premise for the show is to take a follower-ME!!!- through the process from beginning to end, teaching as we progress and learn about products, supplies, laws, building techniques, planning and strategies for weeding out what truly doesn’t work and eliminating what really won’t fit into a specific space and the reward to the follower-ME!!!- is I get to keep the house because it is designed for me but all of the suppliers get great advertising and I would get to travel with my new tiny home promoting the show from coast to coast!!!! What do you guys think about that??????

  13. Kent,

This is a wonderful opportunity; thank you for sharing it with all of us. I have submitted an application. Do you know if we will be able to receive confirmation that it went through? I found the submission confirmation a little mysterious! 🙂

    Thanks!

  15. I am very optimistic about the exposure that tiny and small houses will get; with millions of people seeing what is possible and how liberating it can be, it could create a very powerful movement toward modified building codes that we desperately need.

  16. im hoping we are talking about HGTV! its a great channel and its all about living! it would be grand if they would have a weekly show about tiny homes! they already have a show on different types of homes! not the norms at all, i think we would fit right in!
anyone know when this will air??? im wondering since i want to go tiny and i send in a app and if they pick me would they pay for my home to be built??? grand idea! even a little help would be nice!

  17. Are you sure this is the way that AME casts shows? If my email box is stuffed next week, I’ll know it isn’t.

I wish there was more information available about the logistics of this concept. There’s a huge difference between having a vague idea and being underway in building on an available lot.

  18. Its very exciting. I applied and the message sad my response had been recorded. I guess that is my confirmation they received my application. Any idea when and how they will contact applicants? Thank you…

  19. We would love to participate but are worried about having local codes office involved. In the state/county we are building in we would not be allowed to build our 16 x28 “studio” as a residence ( and we are in the county on 22 acres) but building a “studio” or work shop is permitted..so our “studio” will be completed in the next 60 days…But we will watch…

  21. I applied! I have been trying to figure this out on my own. I am a 58 year old woman, separated, and VERY little income, but in desperate need of a place of my own. If they pay well enough, I can build what I want! I wouldn’t even care if someone followed me around with a camera!

    Pick me! Pick me!

    • We got the follow up request for photos and more timeline info as well!!! Yikes! Kinda scared about the potential, now that I think about it! lol! I too want to know if they are putting a spin on it, can we cancel? This is still our family we are potentially ‘putting out there’ and I can’t have my babies negatively impacted for a tv show drama spin…. Know what I’m saying?

      Reply
      • You’re reading too much into the request at this point. Just roll with it and see where it goes.
It is said to be about small living at this point, not, Exorcising Zombie Mutants in Small Homes.

        • For real, now’s not the time to worry about anything. I’m sure the odds of being picked are super low, and of course you can back out if you find you don’t like the terms

        • lol! Point taken dewhit! “Roll with it”…. Oh Lord help this control freak, scheduling home-school Mom!!! Maybe a lesson here already for me. 🙂

  22. I too have one of those zombie mutant kids. And he’s red-headed! I think it would depend on the type of show and network we’re looking at to determine how they would portray the families. If this is something like a documentary or educational series it would cut out most of the drama. If it’s for one of the other types they’ll just twist anything you say or do.

I would like to know if they are paying for the full builds or if it will be up to the homebuilder. Also, would they let us create a home from scratch using all our own ideas or would we take a back seat? Either way it would still be exciting and when everybody asks when I’m moving I can say “Watch Me!”

  23. My boyfriend & I have discussed the idea of a Tiny House for multiple reasons (financial freedom, independence, the skills earned from building it ourself, etc etc etc), but neither of us are in the position to build one yet, and most likely won’t in the next 6 months. However, I’ll be keeping my eye on the show, as it’ll be a great source of inspiration!

And to those of you who get picked – GOOD LUCK!! We will be cheering for you 😀

  25. I applied! And now it’s all I can think about! We’re destined! 😉
Seriously though, what a great opportunity. 🙂

Kent, have you had any further contact with this major tv network? Details, details! I’m curious about when they might be making their decision, since I came across this 10 days after it was posted.

    Thanks Mucho!

    • I do know the network but can’t share it. Not sure on the time frame but I will see if I can get the promoter to step in and answer some questions again.

      Reply
      • Oh, I didn’t mean for it to sound like I was asking which network, I understand you can’t share that. 🙂
        That would be awesome, Kent!
        Thanks again!

  26. I understand the secrecy surrounding this venture, but am puzzled at the information requested.

Did they want studio portraits casting the subjects in good light, or just selfies of ordinary people?

How does the way one perceives what the neighbors think skew choices?

I noticed many hopeful comments about the production company not only helping with design and build but with costs as well. There was a popular show that came in and gave deserving folks a new home for free. Is need a factor in choices in this production?

Will preference be given to those who have a lot, utilities and specific plans that just need fine tuning or will the production company take a vague idea and run with it?

  27. I also just applied – don’t know if they would be interested in people who live in tiny vintage mobile homes (mine is 10 x 55 and built in 1959 and I also own the land the home is on) but thought I’d give it a shot!

  29. I love that this show might bring attention to the part of America we don’t often see – the arts nomads living outside the 9-5 norm. Many such people contribute to our culture in ways larger than their bank balance or credit score will ever reflect. America’s arts nomads, moving between seasonal, freelance, and contractual employment opportunities, bring commerce to multiple states and cities every year and all most of them ask for is a warm place to sleep, food to eat, and living enough to get by. To live as self-sustaining as possible, to leave places as found or better, and to bring quality art to the rural areas of America. I hope I will get to represent for the mobile artist!

  32. I applied. We have been researching creating a tiny home out of our little detached garage, and are a bit short on funds to really get it going. Baby on the way, it would change our life to get this built. I really hope they are looking to help out folks that might need the assistance and otherwise have a decent amount of requirements sorted, just need that extra boost. Or, from ground up, do it all.
I wrote an article about our desired garage build and the story behind it. http://tinyhomes.com/building-my-tiny-house-before-baby-arrives/

  35. I have been working as a carpenter and home builder since 1969. We are currently working on a 14 x 24 tiny house. I am totally convinced that this concept could lead the country out of recession and give a new hope to our young people.

    Well, maybe a condo^^.

  37. Girls, I’m an early bird and this is my five year Anniversary! 🙂 Five years ago, I pulled a tiny “J” copy house from Big Pine Key, Florida to a five acre parcel of forest land. At first, it was an off-grid retreat and then my family moved and then it turned on grid with a repo portable cabin with a shed attached to it and a concrete bunker and a little vintage serro scotty for company! The tiny house was named the Hobbit house and I fell in to a movement before it became a movement! I now call my little compound The Hobbit Village in Hobbit Land in Hobbit World. The first couple of years, people wanted to interview me as it is a human interest story, but I am no fun to them! I like to share my journey on my Facebook as I live it. I do remember becoming J Shaffer’s 77th friend before the Tiny Revolution kicked off and Alex Pino? Have to love him as I have shared some of the things I have done on his online Tiny house magazine. I will say that I absolutely love living debt free with no mortgage or rent payments after spending most of my adult life in an expensive area of the Country never getting ahead with restrictions on everything. Going tiny was the smartest thing that I have ever done for myself and my family. Cheers to all who are finding themselves indulging in this dream. Your dreams of living simply out of the rat race can become a reality.
