Cedar Strip Trailer

by Dan McMahon

About a year ago, a good friend of mine approached me to build his new home. My friend is an aid worker and spends a lot of his time away from the UK, when he is in the country he spends a lot of his time seeing people in different areas of the country, so obviously the mobile house is the way forward.

I have lived in vehicles on and off for many years and with his additional experience of this lifestyle in mind we have designed something that works really well as a small home.

The complexity of the build is something that I wasn’t really quite prepared for, and has caused me several sleepless nights to say the least, however, I think I can finally see an end in sight.

You can view Dan’s project in much more detail on his blog http://dmc-makerofthings.blogspot.com/ as I have just posted a few of his pictures. Great job Dan, your friend will have many goods years in your beautiful cedar strip trailer.

  1. What’s the chances of getting a coppy of the plans! I live in Florida and I would love to build one of these! You can’t beat the beauty of wood. Just like the old wooden boats, that are worth a lot of money, these type homes are in a class of their own! Nice work! Can’t wait to see it finished. If anyone knows how I can email the builder, I would be grateful!

  2. Hi there all, thanks for the compliments on the build, its really encouraging to hear from people outside of my cold wintry shed in Cornwall, for anyone who would like to contact me i have just added a contact link onto my blog, not sure if its going to work very well, but its better than an openly accessible email address.. i will try to answer queries, and it would be nice to hear input..
    cheers again. Dan.

  3. Wow, this is fantastic! My old man has been building a kayak from scratch using some similar techniques and he’s been at it over a year and a half and is still only half through the project. You’d have to start out with some serious skills if you didn’t want this DIY trailer to consume your life!

  4. Yeah I built a cedar strip boat once I know how involved it is course it’s probably a flat wall is not as hard as the cedar strip boat but it’s it’s quite in labor intense if you have to cut all those strips then in the case of the canoe I had to Cove and bead them then you have a bunch of Staples to pull then you have to sand and rasp it smooth and you lay your fiberglass on for it to set up and it took hours and hours and hours countless hours I didn’t really keep up with it but I mean I actually did it in a week but I did it in the living room with my townhouse apartment and I put down drop cloths and busted on top of the drop cloths but I think the rest of the managers are still found me out he didn’t treat me very well when it was time for me to leave there the living room was just long enough to get that canoe and they’re done so I thought about doing something like this before but I guess it’s so labor intensive that that I just not committed but this looks good that that several aspects of this look great
