SCADpad Apartments Located in Empty Parking Structures
What caught the attention of many people in Dee William’s original tiny house video was that she said her home was smaller than a parking space. Now, the students of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) are actually building tiny houses into parking spaces in empty parking structures.
Designed and built by 75 students and 12 faculty from various academic disciplines, the 128 to 135 square foot SCADpad homes are experiments in urban living, design and technology, but are being used as small apartments. The pads include private courtyards, sleeping lofts, work and study spaces, living rooms and kitchens, bathrooms and showers. The lighting and smart glass film windows are run by an iPad app.
Andrea Zittel’s Wagon Station Encampment
During mild weather in the Joshua Tree area of California, artist Andrea Zittel’s “Wagon Station Encampment” comes alive with artists, designers, hikers and campers and many of them stay in these elevated sleeping pods that allow for comfort, protection from the elements and fresh air. The pods are located a short walk from an outdoor communal kitchen, an outdoor shower and composting toilet.
Camera Buildings Filter Studio and Lighthouse
Camera Buildings designs and builds tiny prefab houses and spaces that can be customized to accommodate any type of need including a yoga space, extra bedroom or office. Buyers also have three designs to choose from: the stylish Filter Studio or the larger Filter House and the mobile Lighthouse.
“The ideas for the Lighthouse, the Filter Studio, and the Filter House all come from the desire to make better homes (or buildings, in the case of the Filter Studio) for people,” John McFarlane of Camera Buildings said. “Tiny houses are so exciting because they are a design challenge to get the same value as a large home from a much smaller building. What’s been great to see is that the idea has really worked for many people who are able to live much better in tiny houses than they were in larger spaces that didn’t suit their needs.”
Amy’s Tiny Lotus House in Montana
Amy Randolph’s Tiny Lotus is nearly ready to bloom. The 133 square foot tiny home with a 7×7 loft is currently being completed in Bozeman, Mont. and Amy plans to complete her new home for about $30,000—much less than most of the homes in her area.
Tiny House Euro on Instructables Built in 75 Hours
This ultra light and mobile tiny house was built by several engineers and scientists in Delft, Holland and then towed through several European countries on its way to Turkey. Stefan, Michelle and James only spent about 75 hours building their traveling companion on wheels and the build process can be seen on YouTube.
