Will Johnston, the executive director of the Microlife Institute, welcomes viewers to his 492-square-foot cottage in the Cottages on Vaugh community in Clarkston, Georgia.

The community, which encourages interaction and community through its pocket neighborhood design, was built on 0.57 acres with houses ranging from 250 square feet to 492 square feet in size.
Designed in a U-shape with editable landscape. This encourages iteraction between the residents where they may accidently bump into each while gathering food.

Johnston is passionate about providing quality, affordable housing and shares his belief in the importance of having a well-built space, despite the current housing crisis and market inflation.
Will gives us a tour of his cottage, it features tall windows, high ceilings, and a usable front porch.

Will shares his personal journey of founding Tiny House Atlanta, which evolved into the Microlife Institute, a nonprofit developer of better density housing.
Check out Will’s video tour of the house and neighborhood.
Will designed his own tiny house to maximize space and functionality, including a foldable drying rack and multi-functioning TV area.

Will transformed the loft area into a functional and multi-purpose space, creating a cozy loft with a twin bed, daybed, storage, and an office nook.

He also converted a small bathroom into a walk-in shower and designed a micro walk-in closet using a barn door.

Despite unexpected costs during the pandemic, the community was able to sell houses at affordable prices due to the subsidy through density and fitting more units on the land.

Will is also the author of a unique children’s book called Nimby the Clown. Check it out here.

I love this floor plan. I’m trying to build a cottage community in CT this has been a major source of inspiration. thank you for the good work you do as a housing advocate to make a project like this come together. I have become a housing advocate myself to build a portfolio as well as offer solutions to our severely constrained housing market. Thank again!
