Tiny Houses are about People

Tiny houses have always been about more than clever layouts and compact kitchens. At their best, they’re about people, and this issue is a perfect reminder of that.

When Dedria Harper Kolb talks about tiny home communities, she doesn’t begin with curb appeal or floor plans. She starts with human connection. Who lives there, how they support one another, and why community matters just as much as the homes themselves. That same shift in perspective shows up in Brenda Mason Parmelee’s journey. What she thought was a simple downsizing decision quickly became something deeper. Less space, yes, but also more intention, clarity, and freedom.

At the same time, the future of tiny houses is being shaped right now in very real ways. A national code decision could finally give movable tiny houses a clear legal path forward, or if not passed it could keep them stuck in limbo. Thanks to designer, builder, and advocate Macy Miller, progress is happening one signature at a time. This is super important!

And for those who remember the early days, Laura LaVoie takes us back. When she joined the movement in 2007, it felt like a secret garden. Today, with growth and visibility comes compromise. Her call is simple and powerful: let’s protect what made tiny living magical in the first place.

This issue isn’t just about tiny houses. It’s about values, voices, and the future we’re building, together.
