What Makes a Good Me Shed?

One of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read was “A Place of My Own” by renowned author Michael Pollan. The book documents Pollan’s desire for a little structure of his own where he could read, write, and daydream. He also wanted to build the place with his own two hands.

Author Michael Pollan wrote about building his own Me Shed in the book “A Place of My Own”.

In addition to the building process, the book also talks about why humans desire these little places of our own.

Many people gravitate toward tiny houses because they want a small, cozy, safe place to call their own. It doesn’t need to be fancy or full of amenities. It just needs to be a place where a person can really feel at home.

If you are not in the market for a tiny house or can’t quite afford one now, maybe what you need is a Me Shed.

What’s a Me Shed? It’s really just a little place to get away from the everyday world. A place where you can read, relax, do crafts, or just watch a bunch of your favorite streaming services.

A Me Shed doesn’t even need to be a shed. It can be a vehicle, a garden or allotment shed, a camper or trailer, or even a walk-in closet or a corner of the garage.

Whatever space you have, make sure it has the following features:

Room enough to fit yourself and only yourself.

This is a Me Shed. It is for you. You are welcome to invite others into your shed, but the priority is you. Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit, nap, and maybe walk around. A good lock might be necessary as well.

Make it unique.

Decorate your Me Shed just how you want it with no input from other people. It can be a Tiki Hut, a 1960s mod club, a bohemian sanctuary, or just chock full of books.

Keep other people out.

If your Me Shed is very inviting, other people may want to invite themselves over or take it over completely (i.e., children). This can be remedied by making sure to emphasize that the Me Shed is yours. Give it a name that reflects you and maybe even put up a “keep out” sign. Just kidding…if anyone is interested in having their own Me Shed, send them this blog post.
