Functional Beauty

We all have to admit there is not much room in a tiny house. What is not being taken up by our own bodies or the bodies of our families or fur-children, needs to be taken up by the rest of our stuff.

This stuff can quickly start to take over the space that we need to live in. We may think all of our things are necessary or beautiful. However, it might be time to think more about if the beautiful things are functional, or the functional things are beautiful.

The best of both worlds is to have items with functional beauty.

Imagine a coffee maker or electric kettle. Rather than it just being a receptacle to make coffee or boil water for tea, can it look like a piece of art? Can you both put it away when finished or leave it out to admire its design?

How about a nice footstool? Can it be a place to rest your feet as well as a place to store a laptop, paperwork, or books?

Maybe you can even keep this idea in mind when designing or building a tiny house. Can a basic windowsill also be a place to sit or place a few plants? Can a tiny bathroom be a place to bathe as well as a sanctuary?

The designer, poet, and radical socialist William Morris quoted the famous saying. “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be beautiful or believe to be useful.”

Keep this quote in mind when shopping or looking for something to add to your tiny home.
