The Los Angeles wildfires have been devastating to entire communities. Not only have the fires destroyed thousands of homes, but it could take years to rebuild.
The destruction has left many people homeless, without insurance, and re-thinking what it means to actually have a home. People are also wondering where they should move to next, if they even want to buy another home at all.
If these disasters continue, in the future, is it best to be mobile?
Would it better to live in something like a tiny home, camper or trailer? When the next disaster hits, is it easier to be able to pack up your tiny house and take it somewhere safer? What exactly is a safe place these days?
Of course, this decision is up to the individual and their personal circumstances, but it is something to think about.
Living a more mobile lifestyle has its pros and cons. However, when you think about the future of disasters, there are a few benefits:
1. They are less expensive to insure
A camper, trailer, or tiny house can be easier and less expensive to insure. Listen to this interview by the Tiny House Podcast.
2. It’s easier to keep up and take care of a smaller space
A camper, trailer or tiny house is a lot easier to take care of. There is less maintenance, chores, and materials with a smaller space.
3. Less clutter
In a tiny space there is no room for excess items, so clutter needs to be kept to a minimum. Less clutter also means less stress.
4. Comfort and safety within reach
When you are mobile, you have all your comforts and your safe space with you all the time.
5. The ability to help others
Without being tied down to a traditional home, you will have the time and energy to help neighbors and other disaster victims.

We should stop shunning small, affordable homes in the first place. All of these disasters might push us to finally get our housing freedom restored. SHELTER IS A NECESSITY OF LIFE. The bedrock principles this country was founded on are listed in our Declaration of Independence. We hold these truths to be self-evident that we are ALL created equal and are endowed with certain inalienable rights. That among these rights are the rights to LIFE, LIBERTY and the pursuit of happiness. That means we ALL should be free to be happy in a home of our own choosing and free to spend our money as WE see fit. What we need is what I am calling The Housing Freedom Restoration Proclamation (president) or Act (congress). It simply says, as long as a home is not a threat to anyone’s health or safety, then any restriction against that home is a misapplication of the police power and is therefore null and void. By the way, Los Angeles could do this themselves. Detroit could repopulate if they let in small, affordable homes. I see a lot of small homes on wheels being brought into western North Carolina.
