Sailboat Living on the Hudson River

With Manhattan rents soaring, Jon and Tory moved out of their cozy apartment north of Little Italy, downsized, docked a sailboat in the Hudson River and moved in. During winter. This is how they make it work.

    • Hey from Sail Me Om! We did have the boat before we moved on full time. We actually bought it while we were still living in California as a way to get out of towns on the weekend. Since we got it, we have always spent about three days a week on it. When we moved to NYC, we trucked it across country and kept it in the Long Island Sound last summer. Decided to move onboard as soon as our lease came up!

  1. Jeez! Don’t tell anyone. Once the secret is out the marinas will be over run and we’ll all be paying $5K per month.

  2. Hey Kent! Thanks for writing about us! We have a blog about our tiny living at SailMeOm.com, and facebook.com/sailmeom. Would love if you would add a link to the blog! Thanks!

  3. I used to live on my sailboat in the Hudson in NYC back in the 1990s. I docked at John Krevy’s old pier for the Frying Pan, and one year I docked at Liberty Harbor North. Those were fun times, I was able to keep the cabin warm with just a little electric space heater and some shore power. One year the ice started getting thick around the hull, it took daily effort to smash it with a 2×4 and rock salt, but I kept any hull damage away. Life aboard wasn’t really too difficult in the winter, except for managing bathroom and shower needs. There was a bathroom at the Marina, but I remember a lot of very cold winter walks, half wet from the shower. And the other big problem was managing the dock lines with thick caked-on ice and icy fingers.

  4. I’d love to live on my sailboat. Wife is against that idea, but I still dream about it.

I love the life around the marina and boat yard. Lots of different people coming together in a common interest. It’s a different kind of social club/group. I’d love to sail up from the Chesapeake to visit NYC once my boat is fixed up. I’m in the middle of a refit, so it’ll be a while before I get to putting it back in the water again.

I love being on the water, sailing, and just getting away from the stress of daily life. As a common saying goes, “A bad day on the boat is better than a good day at work.” 🙂
