Over the last couple of years, I’ve been thinking of adding a new section to the Tiny House Blog. Along the lines of living tiny and within your means is the idea of being prepared for the unexpected. It could be a natural disaster, an interrupted shipping system as we’ve seen in the last year with the pandemic, or any other unforeseen event.
I don’t claim to be an expert in this area but figure we can learn together.
Here are a few of the areas I’d see covering and I am open to any suggestions from you my reader. I’m leaning toward a weekly post and will try to gather the best information I can from the internet to share with you.
1. Heating:
I live in cold country and in the winter it gets downright cold. What options do I have as a backup heating source if the power and gas are shut off?
2. Cooking:
What options do I have to cook my food if the power and gas is shut off for any length of time?
What will I eat if the grocery stores shelves are empty and food is not getting through the shipping channels, etc.?
4. Water Supply:
How will I get safe drinking and cooking water if the power is off and the water isn’t coming through the city water system?
5. Power:
How will I get power for lighting and charging phones and other important communication devices?
6. Lighting:
What options are there for lighting my home if the power is off for a long duration?
7. Shelter:
What if I have to leave my home because of a natural disaster? Where will I stay or what will I live in for a short-term solution?
8. First Aid and Medical:
Do I have what I need for basic first aid and do I have the medications I need for a long duration?
9. Air Purification:
In case of a forest fire or other type of disaster that causes unclean air.
10. Growing food:
Basic strategies to grow a small garden wherever you live.
In 2022 we will dig deeper into these 10 topics and other ways to be prepared for the unexpected.
