Yesterday for fun on the Tiny House Blog Facebook Fan Page I decided to ask a simple question to see what kind of responses you, my readers would share with me. Here is the question: “What’s one word that describes a tiny house?”

  1. I love this list!

    I don’t intend to sound negative, but the first word that came to mind was “illegal”. To me, this word actually describes the system that we have in the majority of our communities and does not describe the actual tiny house. I have great hope and certainty that as this movement grows, we will see this word changed to “legal”. This is an idea who’s time has come and I hope to see it become conventional and mainstream in the near future.

    I think it’s a great idea for those who want one, and regulations should be loosened to allowed more flexibility in housing choices. However they will never become mainstream and the tiny house “movement” is really just a fringe movement.

  6. I was thinking that FEARLESS would be a good word for the one-word description.
    Someone who lives a tiny house lifestyle isn’t afraid of what our culture says is important and necessary.
    Isn’t afraid of not having a huge fridge full of food.
    Isn’t afraid of what the neighbors might think.
    Isn’t afraid of not having the latest and greatest gadget.
    Isn’t afraid of going to the laundromat.
    Isn’t afraid of creativity.
    Isn’t afraid of the spaciousness of the outdoors.
    Isn’t afraid of not having a “great room”, Christmas tree, or garage…
    You get the idea.

  8. Workable…is that a word? The small houses, tiny houses are totally workable…they work! Your place of living is your power spot…it’s where you create, learn, live and do your life…it certainly doesn’t have to be a lot of square footage…it just has to be yours. I love it, I have it although it is not as comfortable as I would like it…(needs indoor plumbing and that will come…so far, so good….building departments be damned…take responsibility…work to change the stupid bldg codes, until then, find a rural place, and just do it!

  10. frugal, shed, honestly, I liked most of the words.
    I just learned that 49 million Americans are now living in poverty; and. The elderly population has an increase due to rising medical costs, they, too, are finding themselves living in poverty, as per former President Bill Clinton on a C-Span TV this month. Former Prez Clinton said that the USA has the highest diabetes in the world. Ouch!!!

    Also,1 in 31 U.S. Adults are Behind Bars, on Parole or Probation

The Pew Center on the States report, released Monday, says the number of people on probation or parole nearly doubled to more than 5 million between 1982 and 2007. Including jail and prison inmates, the total population of the U.S. corrections system now exceeds 7.3 million — one of every 31 U.S. adults, it said.
    Whew! there are a lot of folks in America who are living small (not by choice though?) in prison cells.
