A couple of Sundays ago, I had the chance to stop by and visit Jay Shafer’s first workshop with his new company called Four Lights Tiny House Company.
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the full workshop, but the half day I did get to spend with them gave me a good idea of what the overall workshop was like.
The first thing I noticed was that Jay no longer conducts the full presentation himself. He has brought in some professional help to explain construction techniques such as Daniel Bell, a contractor and instructor who explained the details of building a tiny home. While I was there I listened to the plumbing and electrical discussion and watched the demo. The day before my visit covered constructing walls, roof, etc.
The workshop students also had a chance to tour Jay Shafer’s tiny house and get the feel of what it is like to live in such a tiny space.
Another neat new addition was the hands on experience. Workshop students were given the opportunity to actually participate in plumbing techniques, such as soldering pipes, and connecting the plumbing pieces thus giving them more confidence.
This workshop participants even had a special opportunity to stay on another day or two and participate in a tiny house build going on over at Jay’s house.
If you have the opportunity to take one of Four Lights Tiny House Company workshops I would definitely recommend this top notch experience.

Tiny Angels!!!!!!!!! How cute. I always thought a band of women as demolition workers could be called “Home Wreckers”!! Feel free to use this idea anyone who reads this!!
put the channel locks up and get your vice grips. just barely, lightly grip copper. then you can set down and the vc hols the work. propane will sweat just fine. use mapp if you want. put a chunk of wood or something that’s disposable under copper to catch drips. flux will do wonderful things to your drop cloths.
by the way where are your green safety glasses? also, if you breath the fumes from this it will do wonderful things to your lungs. i don’t do any of this of course, but you should. i use acetylene mostly because it intimidates the customers, so it pays better. i am a master plumber and 68. peace. billy

The “Cajuns” have built and lived in “tiny houses” for generations back in the swamps. They build them on poles/piles to avoid flooding. I lived in Louisiana back in the ’70s and never saw anyone paying attention to building codes or inspectors. If you leave city limits, you can probably build that house you want. . .just take out a “coon-a**” license and “Go For It”!!!
I really wish we could have covered electrical and plumbing in detail at the Boulder Workshop my wife and I attended last year. That definitely would have better prepared me for the wires and pipes I’m about to run!
