Tiny House with Outdoor Kitchen

Paul Wheaton does a lot of videos for his blog and asked me to share some of his tiny house videos with you. Here is the first of many that I will be sharing.

This tiny house has a 100 square foot footprint. One gentleman, “Wizard” has been living here for over five years and share the space with his friend, so the home includes two sleeping spots.

This whole house is the size of a small bedroom by today’s standards.

What makes this house especially comfortable is the outdoor kitchen. This outdoor kitchen isn’t “the” kitchen, there is another kitchen indoors. The outdoor kitchen is customized space for enjoying the summer.

Total cost of this house is estimated at $3000 and includes a small wood cookstove that helps to keep the house warm in winter.

The home is completely off grid. In fact, this house is nowhere near the grid and evening light comes from Wizard’s old fashioned oil lamps.

  1. Nice outdoor kitchen, looks functional as well as comfortable. In the Pacific NW an outdoor kitchen can pretty much be used all year round and there’s a lot to be said for doing your canning outdoors. You might have to hang some netting during wasp or heavy bug season if they drive you bonkers though. Easily done when there’s an overhang. One thing you have to be careful of is the salt-laden moist air if you’re close to the coast. It can wreak havoc with metal hinges, coolers, utensils etc. and some metals react with aluminum to cause galvanic corrosion.

  2. Neat little home! I could see myself living like that someday. Just curious what they do for showers/toilet. I’m assuming there must be an outhouse somewhere… and maybe a solar shower?

  3. Good ideas for improving the indoor air quality. I’d much rather dry any clothes outdoors in the summer to reduce the indoor humidity.

  4. Outdoor kitchens are gaining popularity especially these days. It is a plain and simple good idea to have one inside the property particularly if the home owners love to cook and entertain guests.

  5. Neat video. Always like to see how others manage the small space. Would like to know where the toilet/shower is here, the toilet paper by the door was like a cliffhanger!

  6. $3,000 dollars is a very reasonable price to pay for a house this small, so why are so many of the tiny houses offered for sale now so much more expensive? Why does it cost $20,000 dollars to build a straw bale house? Why are the Tumbleweed House plans so expensive? Are tiny houses just a fad for rich people or will there ever really be affordable housing for everyone?

I would love to buy a pre-built tiny house, but I just don’t have that kind of money lying around. I would have to go the DIY route just to be able to afford a tiny house and I’ve never even built a tiny house (or any other type of structure) before.
