Tiny House in a Landscape

This week’s Tiny House in a Landscape was photographed by Jean Wharton. This tiny house that can be rented at Holly River State Park in West Virginia. It was built by the CCC in the thirties and with all local materials. It has a wonderful living room/bedroom combo with a fire place, full bathroom and kitchen and sits by at the junction of a wild creek and rough and tumble river. The structure is about 20′ x 20’ or 400 square feet in size and sleeps two very nicely!

    • I would like to see a re-run of the CCC program right now. And a lot of other similar programs of that era to rebuild our infrastructure and employ folks.

      • I agree, Benjamin. Not only could we rebuild and restore the grand structures like the stone house above in our state and national parks and forests, we could build more.

The way I envision it is like this: Rather than unemployment or welfare or such, pick those people out and place them in a CCC-like program to help them learn a new trade like stonework, bricklaying, chimney building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, road building, technology infrastructure, and who knows what else. Yes, there would be a startup cost, but right now, before the military bases scheduled for closure are auctioned off, use them to start building a cadre, one that would actually get paid a real-world wage and then let them teach the ones coming later, the real Corpsfolk. Allow people to stay in and get past the entry-level apprentice stage to journeymen, then let them go into practice for themselves, or into the industries of their field. The business world benefits by having a fully-trained new hire, not one they have to spend a year teaching.

The Corps could also be used to stand up new industries, laying the groundwork for businesses to take over once the heavy-lifting is done. If we’re going to throw money at folks for not working, why not get a triple-dip reward for it: The Corpsperson gets a CAREER, not just a job; Industry gets a fully-capable employee ready to deploy to worksites from Day 1; And the US Government gets to do what governments should do which is to support industry by paving the roads to success, much like NASA has done for SpaceX and others.

It’s a no-lose situation, and then their grandkids can point to structures like the stone house above and say, “My grandfather build that!”

Talk about giving Tiny Houses a good name…

        • wonderful Idea. But all manufacturing jobs like steel mills have all gone to cheaper workers overseas. wish we could get all these jobs back in USA. The CCC corps would be just the Fix we need here at home. send your letter to the white house, who knowns it might just get to the guy at the top. good luck.

  1. When is this available and how much for two maybe three people? Looks lovely from the outside and I’m sure the inside is cute. Would love to see inside pictures.

  2. It is very rustic looking and would be a nice place to liver or get away from it all. I too would like to see some photos of the inside. I like the full bath and kitchen feature.
