Christina: Thanks for clarifying the name! That's probably the one, although the photo in the Wikipedia article looks like it may be a pop top or simply a slightly elevated roof. The one I saw had a raised roof about 2 feet wide and 5 or 6 inches high, going down the center with windows along its sides, which facilitated walking from one end to the other plus acting as a skylight to brighten the interior. It was fitted out as a camper and had some fine interior woodwork along with lots of cubby type storage spaces.

Decades ago I remember seeing a Commer (or Conner?) van for sale in Berkeley. It was a British camper that was really classy. Not much bigger than a VW bus but really well laid out. I don't know if they still make them. (I wanted to buy it but the seller changed her mind and decided to keep it.)

New Zealand is heaven for anyone interested in camping vehicles. I toured New Zealand with my wife and son in a rented camper van a couple years ago. The variety of campers is amazing. Most of the small campers are based on a variety of Toyota vans that are not sold in the U.S. The Space Ship is the smallest, and probably the cleverest, rental van. It's also the only one based on a van that has been sold in the U.S. (the Previa). To get a sense of the variety of commercial and home-grown campers in NZ, check out the listings here: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Caravans-motorhomes/Motorhomes/mcat-0001-0028-2983-.htm .
