TenYurt – A Simple Prefab

by Kent Griswold on January 5th, 2012. 15 Comments

Malcolm White contacted me about a new ebook he has written on how to build a new prefab he calls the TenYurt. I recently had the privilege of looking his plan over and it looks very doable for the average person. I am going to let Malcolm tell you more about it. (at this time this is only a concept, Malcolm is building a prototype soon)

For a long time now I have been interested in almost everything related to residential design and construction. If you looked at the bookmarks in my Internet browser you would find that category to have the most pointers by far. While most of my career has been in the semiconductor industry I have spent a fair amount of my spare time and occasionally my full time designing or building things.

More recently I have become increasingly interested in looking for ways to help ease homelessness both in this country and potentially abroad. Partly with that end in mind I have been thinking about how to build very simple structures that could be used for housing. I am also very interested in prefabrication techniques so I was naturally drawn to the idea of simple prefabricated structures.

My new eBook titled “TenYurt – A Simple DIY Prefab Shelter” details one such structure. A TenYurt is a simple 10-sided yurt like building that encloses about 118 square feet of floor space and is about 12 feet from side to side. In its prefabricated but unassembled for easy transportation in a pickup truck. I have included lots of drawings, accurate dimensions and complete how to build details. You can build a very simple basic structure or you can enhance it in most any way your needs and budget suggest.

Dee Williams brings us her latest work. A little ebook called Go House Go – How to Build a Tiny House on Wheels. Dee who has lived in her own tiny house now for several years and is co-owner and builder in her business Portland Alternative Dwellings brings us a little ebook that gives you all the basic knowledge on how to build a tiny house on wheels.

Dee let me preview a copy of this book and I can’t believe all the knowledge she has packed into this little book. Although just 21 pages long, Dee is able to share the engineering basics to help understand how the stresses of a house mounted on a trailer can affect your construction. She gives you size restrictions and permit information along with the basics of trailer construction and how to deal with it. Dee walks you through the floor construction, how to connect the walls and install a gable roof. What is involved in installing the exterior finish and working with vapor barriers, insulation and flashing.

All this for just under $20. Dee’s goal is to help as many people out there find the confidence to jump in and build their own tiny house on wheels. Thank you Dee for making this available and sharing your knowledge and experience.

Tiny Prefab eBook by Michael Janzen

by Kent Griswold on October 4th, 2009. 3 Comments

Michael Janzen of Tiny House Design just introduced a 65 page house plan ebook. It’s called Tiny Prefab, A Do-It-Yourself Prefab Building System and contains the plans and instructions for creating tiny prefab structures that are easy to build from common building materials. The book is a bit of a hybrid between a set of plans and instructions for building and assembling a panelized prefab tiny house. A wide variety of sizes of buildings can be built but the roof plans in the ebook are designed for an 8-foot deep tiny house. The smallest size building is 8’ by 8’.  If more space is desired it’s length can be increased by increments of 4 feet so if you want a structure that is 8′ by 20′ this DIY prefab system will work fine. Below are small screen shots of all the pages in the ebook so you can get a good idea of what is included before you buy.

I’ve had the opportunity to look this book over and I highly recommend it, as it is very detailed and just about anyone should be able to follow these plans and build this structure. The price is $27, so he has priced it to be affordable for everyone. Visit Michael’s blog to purchase your copy.
