Quite of few of you have been asking about Scott Stewart and Slabtown Customs as I have not reported on Scott and his work in sometime and his website was taken down. Scott and his business is still going strong and I have an update here of many of his recent projects. In this post I have put together several galleries and a couple of movies of what Scott has been up to. Here they are:

The Linger Longer, a Park Model

This custom unit is one of our park model builds, it is built perm. on a steel i beam frame with three axles and bumper style hitch (hitch is hidden under front steps) unit is 14′ wide and a total of 38′ long including a 6′ front covered porch with treated decking and vinyl porch posts and railings, layout includes bedroom in back large enough to accommodate a king size bed if needed, large closet, bathroom including a 4′ wide shower stall with seats, full size tall elongated dual flush toilet, sink/vanity, vent/light as well as vanity lights, high grade allure vinyl flooring in bathroom, kitchen includes hickory cabinets, full size fridge, induction cook top, toaster/convection oven, microwave, dual basin full size sink with custom cover that matches the counter top to cover one half of the sink to gain counter space if needed, cabinets include base, overhead and 7′ pantry. house is fully insulated wired and plumbed like a site built home with rv type connections to allow set up in an rv park, set up on 110v service, has two heat/air combo units, one in living area and one in bedroom, layout also includes two lofts, one 6′ storage loft over the front porch that has a custom installed stained glass window in the gable end that has a light behind it controlled by a switch next to the front door allowing the owners to light the stained glass at night for a very nice look,  house also has a large sleeping loft in the back accessed by stairs between the bath and bedroom, this loft is the full 14′ wide and just over 17′ long creating lots and lots of added sleeping/reading room, the side walls of the house in the loft area are 10′ tall with a 7′ tall ceiling below the loft in the bedroom and bathroom to gain headroom in the loft, the loft has railings but is open looking down on the living area below. Kirsten Dirksen from faircompanies.com just sent me a new video she produced about a transformable tiny apartment in Barcelona.

When Christian Schallert isn’t cooking, dressing, sleeping or eating, his 258 square foot apartment is an empty cube. To use a piece of furniture, he has to build it.

If Christian wants to sleep, he rolls his bed out from under the balcony, his stairs then become bedside tables and he can even swing a TV out from the wall.

When he is ready to dine, he lowers a plank from the wall, turning his flower-stand into a table support and using his stairs as a bench.

When it is time to cook, he clicks a spot on his vast wall of click-able furniture, and a spring-loaded door swings up to reveal an instant kitchen: double-burner, dishwasher, sink, countertop and microwave oven. The full-sized refrigerator and freezer click open just alongside. You really have to know what is behind door number two.

The apartment is located in Barcelona’s hip Born district, the tiny apartment is a remodeled pigeon loft. Christian (a Barcelona-based photographer) says its design was inspired by the space-saving furniture aboard boats, as well as the clean lines of a small Japanese home.

There is definately more work involved in constructing and deconstructing your dining room/kitchen/bedroom every day or meal (one of his friends has dubbed it “G.I. Joe’s flat”), Christian claims it helps keep him in shape.

In the video, Christian shows his lego-style home and invites a few friends over to cook and lunch with him in his small space.

Scott Stewart, who I have featured quite a few times lately because of his fine quality and affordable prices has been bouncing the idea of an American made Cube. The French Cube post was one of the most popular and I think their might be enough interest to build something similar here in the U.S. Here are Scott’s thoughts and he would enjoy feed back from you on the subject.

I am attaching a rough draft of a cube that is 11x11x11, these are inside measurements, I wanted to go with a size that stays under the 12′ outside dimension for permit purposes, once over 12′ escort cars are involved and this raises the costs and slows down delivery. This also gives much more room inside over the French version which is 10′ x 10′.

I have changed it up a little, I placed the door on a different wall, across from the kitchen, I thought I could offer a murphy type bed/entertainment center on the wall to the right of the door, between the door and kitchen, the loft access comes up quite a bit for older folks, this would be an option, I also turned the bed area 90 degrees putting it over the bathroom/kitchen area, I thought this makes good sense since you really don’t need much headroom there anyway, this allows dropping the ceiling there to give more room in the bed area.

I plan to use octogon or even regular window instead of the round windows in the French version, they do look good but are expensive, hard to trim and hard to buy or replace. Window placement can be anywhere, I only show a couple on the drawing but will be glad to install anywhere.

As for pricing, I am thinking $10,500 for the completely finished version, $4500 for the dried in model which would look totally finished on the outside but would just be a shell. I will as usual include delivery within 300 miles of Mountain View, AR and will include crossing into one state , any other state crossings and or extra mileage will be extra, $3 per loaded mile plus permits for each added state.

Scott would also like your input on size and I have put together a small poll below and would appreciate your response on this. Also please add your suggestions and ideas through the comment section.

French Cube 10' x 10'

James from Canada wrote me the other day about a tiny house he designed and has been living in the last two months, and that he is going to start producing the tiny home for others to enjoy too. I’ll let James tell you his story.

About a 18 months ago I started noticing articles on the internet about people getting away from massive homes, and similar sized debt loads to support them. People were starting to become aware of what affect their habits were having on the environment. I have lived in Europe for a lot of my life and am quite used to the idea of a compact efficient home.

Thinking about it further I decided to see how small it would be possible to make a home that was still comfortable to live in and at the same time use building materials as efficiently as possible. Hence the choice to pick 12 foot dimensions for our primary unit. Continue Reading »

One of my most popular posts was the Carre D’etoiles French Cube. Now for the exciting news… the CUBE is coming to the USA/CANADA in 2010!

Daniel Jean-Jacques Inversin from Carre D’etoiles French Cube emailed me yesterday to tell us the following:

We are currently planning on manufacturing the CUBES on the west coast (by the same “manufacturing team” that we have in Europe) and after the exact location has been finalized I will be able to send you an anticipated cost of units to be purchased and installed in the USA/CANADA.
