Ambershawn recently brought something interesting to my attention, Costco, the big box store, sells a tiny house. It is called the “HomePlace” guesthouse and is one of their many small structures. Costco builds tiny houses, play houses and garden sheds. Personally, I think the Bungalow Garden building would make a perfect tiny house, it ranges in size from 12ft X 16ft to 12ft X 24ft and the costs for what appears to be a shell range from $4,995 to $7,244.

You can select a paint color, asphalt shingle color or even have wood shingles. According to Costco, the Bungalow provides a great mix of pleasing functionality and aesthetics.

Engineered drawings are available upon request to help you get many of our Garden Buildings/Garages approved for your site. These drawings detail standard features of the unit, and provide information about snow and wind loads.

Some locations/municipalities require that a stamped engineered drawing be prepared in order to obtain a permit; contact one of our Design Consultants for further details if you will need drawings. Be sure to obtain any required permits before placing your order.

Standard features include:

2×4 Rafters 24″ on center

Doub le plywood gussets

Screened wood vents

2×4 Double wall plate

Factory primed trim

Boxed in 12″ gables

2 Wrought iron flower hooks

Factory primed siding

Sidewalls 2×4 16″ on center

Insulated raid panel double house doors

Real lock set

Black antique hinges

Three vinyl flower boxes

24×30″ Aluminum sider windows

18″ wide front overhang

Shingles

Off-set A-frame roof

So, if you are looking for an economical starting place for your tiny house, this is for sure an option. Check it out online here and or visit your local Costco and ask for more information.

I am excited to introduce a brand new small house straw bale plan. I have been involved with Gabriella Morrison wife of Andrew Morrison of Strawbale.com to design a straw bale home for the Tiny House Blog readership. The new home has been named The Applegate Residence. These plans are fresh and hot off the drawing board and I have had the privilege of looking at them first hand and they are excellent. The home has not been built yet but the Morrison’s are hoping to have one built sometime in the next six months. The plan is to build one through their workshops. If you buy the plans and would like to have it built please let me know and I will get the word to them.

The Applegate Residence was meticulously designed by Chris Keefe of OrganicFormsDesign.com and every nook and cranny has a function and purpose. There is 770 sqft of living area which includes a great loft space and a downstairs bedroom and can comfortably house a couple and perhaps even a small family. All of the comforts we are accustomed to in the western world are included so it’s really not about lowering the quality of living but rather, adjusting the size to be more in line with what is really necessary and sustainable not only for the planet but also for the pocketbook.

The Applegate Residence has been designed to be affordable to build so that you can live debt free in as short amount of time as possible. The $20,000 estimate to build the Applegate includes the cost of the foundation, walls, bales, mesh, plaster, roof, interior walls, so everything that makes up the structure. It also includes $2,000 as an initial budget for finish flooring, cabinetry, appliances, wiring, plumbing, fixtures, and finish materials. In our experience, it is possible to find these items at very low cost or salvaged, depending on how motivated you are to find the best deals on those items.

This beautiful bungalow style home is perfect for those looking to get out of the rat race by downsizing into something that is super efficient and cost effective. This is a perfect example of space-smart design in which every space has a use and is essential to the overall flow of the home.

The plans are available in two different designs. The 770 square foot with the downstairs bedroom or the 570 square foot without the downstairs bedroom. You decide what is best for you.

Included with the plans are three free DVD’s which include the following:

Post and Beam Straw Bale Instructional Double DVD set (nearly 3 hrs of step-by-step instruction)

How To Plaster With Natural Hydraulic Lime

How To Pour A Monolithic Concrete Slab Foundation

Strawbale.com is offering the Tiny House Blog readers an introductory discount for four days starting at 7:00 A.M. PST Friday and ending on Tuesday July 12th at 7:00 A.M. PST. So I would like to invite you to jump in and purchase these plans right away by clicking this link Here!

(Note all strawbale.com plans and DVD’s bought through the Tiny House Blogs links and ads help keep this site running.)

Designed as a very small bungalow, the Loring comes with several options to suit your needs. You can choose between a sleeping loft upstairs, or a cathedral ceiling. Tumbleweed also has a larger version with a downstairs bedroom at the back of the house. It is the same floor plan as the Bodega, except that the roof line makes the curbside appearance very different. Designed with simplicity in mind, this house home has an abundance of light, and yet is very simply designed.

Chelsey from Walla Walla, Washington contacted me about a small house she had spotted for sale in her home town. Having lived in that area for two years during my college days and communicating with Chelsey, we discovered that we both had graduated from Walla Walla University located in College Place which is a small town right next to Walla Walla.

This Quaint Bungalow Would Make A Great First Home Or A Vacation Rental. It Is Conveniently Located Near Scenic Downtown Walla Walla, And Is Priced To Move. Owner Offering Lease Option. At 420 square feet and a price of $25,000, this would be a neat little house to own. At that price I imagine it might require some work, but worth checking into. Sorry, no interior photos or floor plan.

Today is a milestone for the Tiny House Blog. This is the 500th post for the blog. I want to thank everyone for your support and loyalty to the Tiny House Blog.

As the Tiny House blog grows and matures, I am looking for more ways to make your visit worth your time. One way of doing this is by adding quality tiny house plans to the Plans Page.

Today I am adding another plan called the Simple Life Bungalow, designed by Architect Steve Williams for his sister Joejoh. Steve is offering a $25 discount to anyone who buys the plans through the Tiny House Blog. In order to claim your discount once you purchase the plans you need to email Steve at info@welovesmall.com and type in the message “Tiny House Blog” Steve will than send you a check through the mail.

Here is the Simple Life Bungalow Philosophy:

Times have changed. Small is not only becoming necessary, but also sensible, beautiful and liberating. The concept of The Simple Life Bungalow isn’t for everyone but it can be for:

People of age wishing to have an independent life in a home of their own that can be built so cost effectively, that a mortgage won’t be needed

Young single people who wish to do other things with their money than feed a mortgage

People desiring a guest house or “Mother-In-Law” quarters on their property

Families wanting a small and highly desirable rental property

Those in need of a weekend retreat

The Simple Life Bungalow is a beautiful option because it is small, elegant and contains everything a person needs for a complete life. Because of its size it is affordable, extremely energy efficient and relatively easy to build. The classic Craftsman style is the ultimate in comfort and livability. The Simple Life Bungalow’s size makes it possible to utilize the highest grade of building materials for low maintenance responsibilities and pride of ownership.

Life can be beautiful with a minimum of possessions… Sufficient clothing, a desk for communicating, a good book and a warm fire… These are the things of real value.

Visit The Simple Life Bungalow website to get the full details.

Recently I have been in touch with Raoul Hennin of Bungalow in a Box and requested an update on his work. (read our previous post here).

Raoul has been working on updating his site with some recent projects and also has added a couple of cool videos as well. You can watch one of them on the right.

Raoul recently added a 12 x 12 addition to a home he had built for a customer a couple of years ago in Maine. He calls this project the Brigadoon and you can see more pictures at his site.
