Micro Cottage in the Woods
Joanne McFadden of the Daily Gazette in Schenectady, NY writes about a Greenfield couple who build a tiny little house to put up the guests when they come visiting.
Kim and Ray Faiola had space at the end of the road on their lot in the woods and thought it would be a perfect place for a guest cottage. Ray did extensive research and found a plan he liked. He decided to use Any Sheldon’s Micro Cottage design which is a 574 square foot home.
Ray spent nine months building the cottage and utilized many items from the main house in decorating and constructing the home. The house is connected to the septic system and electrical. His brother assisted him along the way as well.
“Halfway through I thought, ‘What was I thinking?’?” joked Ray of the 9-month project, which took place from April through December in 2006. “Just because something’s small doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. It’s actually harder, because you’re working in small quarters.”

Also if you are interested in this cottage Andy Sheldon has a holiday special going on right now and you can buy the “Micro Cottage” plans for $99 at Sheldon Designs website. The usual price is $139 and the sale price is good through December 31, 2008.

What a pretty little place—-really like the kitchen island they incorporated. Hope they aren’t surprised when their guests don’t want to leave !
Mind blowing and rare house is exhibited. It’s a sign of how innovative the housing industry is looking now? Staying in such a house for the life time can be a big thrill. Many thanks for showing the build plan too…

Wow, that looks awesome. I could easily imagine living in such a small house forever. For one person it looks big enough to me.
Oh, and I love the dog in the first picture. Looks just like my own.
Wow! I am IN love! Right now my husband and I are almost two years into RV living frugally. We are still discovering this new style of life… I would love to ‘land’ in this house eventually … once we discover where we want to grow roots again. I love this blog!
How much does it cost to build this house? I want one too!
Hi Joe – this house was built from plans from Sheldon Designs and the costs can very from place to place. Sheldon just introduced a cabin calculator to help figure out the costs, so go check it out. Also they are having a 50% sale through midnight on Valentines day, so if you have been thinking of buying the plans, now is a good time.

I am curious about the issues related to connecting a micro house to the main house septic and well. How close do they need to be? Any other discussions or tips would be useful.
Thanks.
Hi Cate,
Unfortunately that really varies for each location, each city and county have there own requirements. I wrote an article on the Tumbleweed blog about this and you can read it here: http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/build-it-yourself/when-is-a-building-permit-not-required/ It should give you some idea on where to start looking for information. I will also look into more information on the subject and share it with the blog…Kent
