Camera Buildings designs and builds tiny prefab houses and spaces that can be customized to accommodate any type of need including a yoga space, extra bedroom or office. Buyers also have three designs to choose from: the stylish Filter Studio or the larger Filter House and the mobile Lighthouse.
“The ideas for the Lighthouse, the Filter Studio, and the Filter House all come from the desire to make better homes (or buildings, in the case of the Filter Studio) for people,” John McFarlane of Camera Buildings said. “Tiny houses are so exciting because they are a design challenge to get the same value as a large home from a much smaller building. What’s been great to see is that the idea has really worked for many people who are able to live much better in tiny houses than they were in larger spaces that didn’t suit their needs.”
The 107 square foot Filter Studio can be placed on any foundation and includes efficient LED lighting, solid hardwood flooring and low-VOC interior finishes. The unusual design allows light to filter in, making this tiny studio seem larger than it really is. The Lighthouse is a 100 square foot home on wheels that includes a sleeping loft with high pitched ceilings, a bathroom, kitchen, living and work spaces. The unique features of this THOW are the large windows and skylights which let in a ton of light. The Lighthouse can also be ordered as a basic model for DIYers.
“Hands-down my favorite feature is how these tiny houses use natural light,” John said. “Creating spaces that make you feel good when you’re in them is important in any design, but in tiny houses it’s critical, where the sense of home isn’t dependent on being fixed to a foundation, but on how you feel in the space.”
Camera Buildings are switching to a manufacturer of their homes and are hoping that a production line technique will make the homes more affordable. Currently the cost of the Filter Studio starts at $25,000. The cost of the Lighthouse or Filter House will depend on the features included and delivery distance. Camera Buildings deliver their prefab homes to Canada and the U.S. and are planning on future deliveries to other countries.
“The tiny houses have been very well received, both by tiny house owners and enthusiasts, but also by the city planners and officials we’ve spoken to,” John added. “Our project now is creating a viable tiny house community that will help people make the best use of tiny houses as affordable, sustainable housing with long-term, reliable stability about where their tiny houses are located.”
