Thanks! You are correct with your formula; in addition since we use a full round, chink style construction the backer rod (material between the logs and behind the chinking) has a R-value of its own as does the chinking. In addition we do not build with anything less then a 10" average diameter, which makes the R-value even greater. Nice warm cozy cabin :)

The cabin is sitting on a crawl space foundation - the water hook-up is in the crawl space and yes, it is a well. Same is true for the septic hook-up, in the crawl-space and the electrical is on the outside of the cabin, similar to a mobile home... The cabin is actually in a subdivision...

The R-Value for a log home is 1.16 per square inch. This equates to roughly an R12 for a 6X6" log. It is referred to as thermal mass effect. The larger the log, the higher the insulation factor. What this number does not take into account for is the fact that log R-values do not fluctuate with the moisture content in the air as traditional insulation does. If it is cold and rainy outside, then a traditionally insulated home has a decreased R-value. A log homes R-value remains constant, therefore the stability of insulation make log homes more energy efficient than stick framed homes. Hope this information helps.

It's fairly low. But, logs act a lot like wattle and daub, or other mixed earth/wood wall systems- they provide a combination of both insulation AND thermal mass.

Water is likely a well. You can see the electric meter in the last photo. It's likely underground.

Hi Freth - Avanti makes these cool little compact kitchens and they are fairly reasonable price wise if I remember right. I think they may be on Amazon but I did not check (do a google search and see). You can go and see the current models at the Avanti website: http://www.avantiproducts.com/products/cat/50
