A Micro Home Marketing Survey

Guest Post by Walt Barrett

In order to get an idea of the number of people involved in the actual market for micro homes we are asking you to answer a few questions. We are not asking for personal information, but taking a poll to learn your interests. If you answer these questions it may very well speed up the permit process and also the emergence of mass produced micro homes to the marketplace. Mass produced homes and kits will greatly reduce the costs of each unit. Competition is the great equalizer.

Thank you in advance.

Please comment below on the three questions at the end of the poll. Short answers for numbers 12, 13, and 14 would be appreciated.

Do you think you will ever build or purchase a micro home or apartment?

Merry Christmas from the Tiny House Blog

by Kent Griswold on December 25th, 2009. 12 Comments

I want to wish all the “Tiny House Blog” readers a Merry Christmas and give you a little update on what has happened over the last year on the blog.

First of all a big thank you to each of you who comes and reads the blog on a regular basis. The blog would not exist without you, period!

There have been some big changes this last year and I want to list a few of them below.

merrychristmas

  • Traffic – In January we averaged 1500 visitors a day. In November we averaged 4500 visitors a day.
  • Ranking – The “Tiny House Blog” to my knowledge has become the #1 destination for Tiny House enthusiasts passing even Jay Shafer of Tumbleweed and the Small House Society.
  • Theme – Clean new theme, easier to read and much more visual (Thank you Michael Janzen for such a great design)
  • Advertising – Less advertising in the articles, easier to read and less distractions
  • Facebook & Twitter – You can now follow the “Tiny House Blog” on both of these social networks

I also want to thank each and every one of you who sends me information you find on the internet and to those who step up and share their experience and story with me. Your involvement helps make this blog a success.

Some new ideas I want to implement in 2010 are:

  1. Weekly Newsletter via email
  2. Tiny House Directory – eBook
  3. Tiny House Book “Living in a Tiny House – Your Story”

In the last year I went from being a part time hobby blogger to a full time “Pro-blogger” and I have had several people ask me how it happened and a couple suggest that I write an eBook telling my story. I am seriously considering doing this and I would like to take a poll to see what interest is out there. I would have to charge a small amount for the ebook but will try to keep it affordable. If you would please give me your honest opinion in the poll below, I would really appreciate it.

“I am endless impressed by the fact that you are able to post so much
good content on your site. You put most blogs to shame! I personally
would be willing to pay for an e-book where you explain how you do it.
I’m sure a lot of your other reads feel the same way.” -Jeff

P.S. Look for a Sale and a new eBook which will be included with Sonoma Shanty Plans next week. I ran out of time and am out of town so was not able to launch it Christmas day as originally planned.

Protohaus II – Poll

by Kent Griswold on December 17th, 2009. 5 Comments

Ann Holley who has built one of my favorite tiny houses the Protohaus is getting ready to start part two of her project. Ann is calling it a sort of addendum to the ProtoHaus.

Ann has added a new page “New Structure” to www.protohaus.moonfruit.com. There are images of models for the next design and some information there. I am going to let Ann go into the details below:
protohaus11

These models represent the next step of the ProtoHaus project. We are in development of an additional structure that will function as a multi purpose space. First, it will be a light-weight model. ProtoHaus weighs in at 9,500 pounds. A light-weight model (under 1,500 pounds) will be easier to move at short notice and will require less fuel to transport. Second, it will be a mobile education unit.

We would like to take the project on the road without having to break down our whole system. Third, it will function as an extra bedroom where we may house guests. Forth, it will act as an office space. Finally, it will be our vacation home at the beach, in the mountains or even in a commercial parking lot.

Each model has its own advantages and drawbacks. Ann is leaning toward the vardo-conastoga-shepherd hut-airstream hybrid.  I am curious what your choice would be.

Please vote below.

Tiny House Blog Tag Line

by Kent Griswold on September 27th, 2009. 21 Comments

My goal is to be constantly improving the Tiny House Blog and you may have noticed a few changes already, the first being the cleaner theme that was installed Friday, this change makes the blog easier to read and enjoy.

One of my self-assignments is to select a tag line that explains what the Tiny House Blog is all about. I asked several friends to give me their input and write down what they thought the Tiny House Blog meant to them in a single sentence. The results are listed in the poll below.

I would like to get your vote and see which one you think fits the Tiny House Blog the best. Also if you have a tagline you would like to suggest, write it in the comment section below.

Thank you for your input.

Tortoise Shell Homes Poll

by Kent Griswold on October 27th, 2008. 20 Comments

Bill Kastrinos of Tortoise Shell Homes is thinking of venturing into a little larger home to reach a broader audience of tiny house buyers. He is considering making an 8 x 32 foot home that is a total of 246 square feet. It would be transported via trailer just like his other tiny homes and he is aiming for a price between $25,000 and $30,000. He would like to know if there is interest, so if you would be kind and fill out the poll below it would give him and idea of where to go with this.

Proposed Exterior View

8 x 32 Floor Plan

Thank you.

Would this 246 square foot home interest you?
