Needed: Small House Stories and Photos

I want to start a feature of stories and photos of people living in what I call “small houses.” What I need from you, readers, are your stories and stories of friends or family living in homes or apartments or other structures that range from 250-1000 square feet. (more or less)

It would be nice to have photos of the exterior and interior of the homes as well. It’s always nice to be able to show how space is utilized. What works and what doesn’t work.

I would like to cover all type of homes from modern to the old homes that were built back in the early 1900’s. Also if a floor plan is available of a home it would be very useful!

To share your story please email tinyhouseblog @ gmail.com and attach photos and a writeup about your small home with the subject line “Small House Story.” Thank you for your help in covering this new feature!

  2. Kent, I would love to see more family small home. I am a single Mom with 4 kids. I want to downsize and would love to see small homes that would work for more than 1 person. Keep up the good work! I love your blog.

  3. Great Topic,
It’s coming down to the wire for me. I’m moving in to my tiny tin house in 10 days. There is still 6 feet of snow around it and the shipping container is still totally blocked.I sledded off the roof last week.I’ll be looking for ideas as I set it up.
Kent, do you have any interest in co-hosting a tiny house design party this spring. I’ve already got all the elements;Land, Tiny Cabin, 20′ Shipping container, playhouse, teahouse, and Gypsy Trailer(I guess I’m into it a little). Of course, it is all a work in progress, but its comfortable and functional. Come visit in Truckee for a look-see. I’ve got vid and pics but am slow to learn about posting. I’ll get something up on a blog or my website(eventually). I wish Deek was nearby he’d dig all my crazy shacks and he could make a funny video. I’ve built others for clients too. Thanks for the Great Blog!

  4. You mentioned apartments so you can’t forget the biggest American city with the smallest homes Americans know, New York City.
You hear about how small apartments are here (with sky-high rents), but you don’t really know it until you experience them yourself.
High rents but no car needed and that makes living here (along with cheap groceries) a better bargain than, say, Seattle. Food is REALLY expensive there and rent isn’t much cheaper….

    • Hi Steve, yes I would be interested in your smaller backyard homes to show off what is being done and what can be done. Especially if you have people willing to share their experiences with us. -Kent

  6. Hi kent,
If the home is under 1000 square feet, well engineered, inovative and saves energy, we are interested in reading about it. The 800 to 1000 sq ft sizes may be easier to get permits from the cities and towns.
    Thanks,
    Walt

250 to 1000 sounds wonderful!! A max of 1000 square feet should encompass most family's needs, who are interested in downsizing, or retirees not managing loft bedrooms. Yay!

For the apartment dwellers: I mentioned this when you were asking for suggestions but I will mention it again. ApartmentTherapy.com is a great site and they are running their annual "Small, Cool Contest" right now.

Love love love to see floorplans!!

    Way to go, Kent!
