Happy Thanksgiving Day 2012

I would like to wish all our North American readers a Happy Thanksgiving Day! I thought this house fit the mood of the day and I hope you enjoy it.

This is the Laughing House sculpted by Linda Smiley and Ianto Evans out of cob, clay, sand, and straw. Dug locally right from the ground. They live in the temperate climate of the Pacific Northwest, so high thermal mass (non-insulating) walls work in their climate.

  1. Actually, Canada officially celebrates Thanksgiving in October, though some will also celebrate in November as well. Our neighbour is originally from the US and he always hosts a great potluck dinner at American Thanksgiving, complete with all those special decorations kids make.

  2. Thank you. What a beautiful house as well, so thanks for the picture too. : ) Someday I dream of being a tiny house owner, living off the grid as much as posible, and having a little garden. Sounds like paradise. Namaste

  3. actually I have been to the Cob Cottage Co. for several workshops and have seen this beautiful house in person. although it was several years ago and was not quite as colorful and finished at the time. the wall you can see on the right side of the pic actually circles around and becomes the front yard boundary “fence”. it is an amazing place they have created outside Coquille, OR. they are interesting folks and Linda lives up to her name.

  4. The first time I saw this photo, I thought it a toy for children to play with! But, then, I spotted the life sized human standing near-by! SWEET! Beautiful Home!
